SMS or Short Message Service is more commonly known as "text" as in "Send a text" or "texting" .
SMS has been a huge sucess but originally was designed as a protocol that would mainly be used by the GSM system, now with most opertors offering an SMS bundle with their tarrifs billions of SMS messages are sent each year and Mobile Information services deliver masses of data to users via SMS.
