GPRS Tip!
Don't forget with most service providers you are billed for the data transmitted and recieved - so will see more on your bill than the combined total size of the messages, web pages, documents and images that you downloaded.
Mobile data technology is evolving. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) allows high speed data tansfer, typically to 20 or 30 Kbps and billed by the Kb opposed to per second of connection time. It is (dependeing on network set up!) an always on technology enabling the user to subscriber to push data services and to configure email to be automatically checked regularly by the phone over the GPRS connection.
Technically speaking GPRS adds packet switching data protocols to GSM networks. The theoretical maximum speed for GPRS is 171.2 Kbps. SOmetimes described as a 2.5G technology.
Typically configured on most UK cell phones as the data carrier for WAP and MMS messages.
Comparison between GPRS, EDGE and 3G data services to be added here.
