EDGE stands for Enhanced Data GSM Environment. It is a technology which builds upon the basic GSM service to deliver data at rates up to a theoretical maximum of 384 Kbps and so could enable the delivery of broadband type applications to mobile phone and mobile computer users. However due to capacity pressure on some 2.5G networks in Europe and the need for networks to be seen to generate revenue from the huge invesstments made in 3G EGDE is likley to be relegated to use as a 3G fill in technology, providing high rate data our of major towns.
