Bluetooth Technology Guide

Bluetooth

Named after a Danish King Bluetooth is a short range wireless connection technology now installed in many mobile phones, PDA's and digital Cameras. The most comon use for Bluetooth is to provide a wireless link between a mobile phone and a headset - wire free, hands free.

Technically speaking Bluetooth has some similarities with 802.11, both operate in the 2.4GHz frequency, but the two technologies cannot interconnect.

Other technologies which enabel users to connect thier phones to other devices include IRDA (infra red) and the emerging UWB (Ultra Wide Band) and ZigBee standards.

Bluetooth Tip

Don't expect a Bluetooth mobile phone headset to work with a Bluetooth enabled music player - there are different Bluetooth "profiles" used for audio headsets and phone headsets. The use of Bluetooth profiles simplifies things for designers, but makes life a whole lot more complex for us consumers!

Set up pairing codes for your Bluetooth devices, these act like passwords so that only people you give the code to can connect to your device, setting your own Bluetooth Pairing code helps prevent the use of software such as Bloover form being used to read contact details and SMS messages fron your phone without your permission.
